Macbooks and Matcha: 12 of Our Favourite Cafe and Spaces for Working Across London

Laptop, plant, and matcha latte on wooden table. Text: "Macbooks and Matcha: 12 of our favourite spaces for working across London." Cozy ambiance.

There’s something quietly magical about typing away at coffee shop (where this article has been written in fact): the gentle hum of background conversation, the hiss of the coffee machine, and the unspoken agreement that everyone is welcome to linger a little longer in the space. These are the places we have found truly transformative for focused work or simply a change of scenery. Many of us freelance or have the opton to “WFH”, in this article, we wish to highlight such spaces. The spots that offer strong Wi-Fi and stronger matchas.

  1. Barbican Centre

LOCATION: Barbican | CHARGING POINTS: Occasionally | SEATING: Comfortable, varied

Great for co-working due to the sheer number of seats in the venue. Areas such as the library for focused quiet work but also seating in the mean foyer for when you feel to be amoungst the general buzz of the building. There are also always fun cultural things on at the Barbican Centre itself.

  1. Cafe 1001

LOCATION: Brick Lane | CHARGING POINTS: Yes | SEATING: Super Comfortable

Walking distance from the centre of Shoreditch. The brunch here is fantastic. Where it gets busy and jumping in the evening, the mornings are much quieter and we do not believe enough people know about this cafe for work. You can also always get money off food and drinks with EatClub.

  1. Don’t Tell Dad

LOCATION: Queens Park | CHARGING POINTS: Yes | SEATING: Super Comfortable

This is one spot we actually wanted to gatekeep. A little more out of the way over in North-West London. Pastries fantastic here and the vibes really good for working. It does get quite popular so it is somewhere you have to come in ealry to claim a spot near some plugs.

  1. The Gantry

LOCATION: Stratford | CHARGING POINTS: Occasionally | SEATING: Fairly Comfortable

I have seen people take calls here during the day so I would recommend as a place if to hop on a Zoom or Google Meet. There is a formal coffee shop on the ground floor but we would most recommend the top floor bar and cafe. If we ever need a spot to pass some time and keep warm in Stratford, we head straight to the top floor for a night cap (late night green tea).

  1. Grind

LOCATION: London Bridge | CHARGING POINTS: Few | SEATING: Fairly Comfortable

Less than a minute's walk from London Bridge station, we have attended many an evening meeting here. Really fun and chic in there, the venue has some cute corners to catch a vibe afterhours or work alongside a hot beverage during the day. Due to location it is another which tends to be oversubscribed.

  1. The Hoxton

LOCATION: Shoreditch | CHARGING POINTS: Few | SEATING: Super Comfortable

Great location. Working in this hotel during the day is super chill. We now prefer over the popular 100 Shoreditch Hotel, as they have recently implement a Soho House-inspired "no laptops after 6pm" rule.

  1. Library lounge

LOCATION: Kings Cross | CHARGING POINTS: None | SEATING: Super Comfortable

From simply an interior-decor POV, the mid-century modern decor creates the cosiest, most aspirational space to work at. Surounded by shelves of gorgeous books, we do not want people to be put off by the perceived hautiness of the space; it is a great place to get some work done.

  1. Loaft

LOCATION: Covent Garden | CHARGING POINTS: None | SEATING: Fairly Comfortable, but limited

Aesthetically, we have another hit. For the beige clean-girl aesthetic lovers, this small Covent Garden gem is a great place to grab a hot beverage and sit and read. Notably very laptop-friendly it is a spot you should come to with your laptop already fully charged.

  1. Ole and Steen

LOCATION: Marlyebone | CHARGING POINTS: Yes | SEATING: Fairly Comfortable

With a really coveted central location, we would recommend this spot simply for a yap admist an Oxford Circus or Bond Street shopping trip. Just know that for us to include a chain coffee shop in here it is because the downstairs part of this cafe has optimal charging points where there is no pressure to continoysuly buy from the menu.

  1. Redemption Roasters

LOCATION: Angel | CHARGING POINTS: Yes | SEATING: Not the most comfortable

An interesting recommendation as we feel the downstairs in this cafe is more aesthetic focused than comfort-led. Due to downstairs seating, you can be left alone to work in private without being constanty harassed to buy another beverage like the aforementioned Ole and Steen. The outside garden a lovely workspace for summer months also.

  1. The Riverfront

LOCATION: Southbank | CHARGING POINTS: None | SEATING: Fairly comfortable

A great location for people watching as it has spaces with both in and outdoor spaces. Great if you are wtching a film at BFI Southbanks (a favourite cinema of ours). Similar to the barbican its cafe is also powered by Benugo.

  1. Welcome Collection

LOCATION: Euston | CHARGING POINTS: Yes, limited | SEATING: Comfortable

The reading room here we would most recommend for quiet work. Walking distance of Tottenham Court road, it is great to pause and read here, the beanbag seating optimal for comfort. There are several desks very reminscent of university libraries.
